CHAPTER TEN

JULIE PARKED in front of the house on Sycamore Road. Despite the presence of her ghostly husband, she felt ridiculous for coming to a stranger’s house and trying to—what exactly? Julie didn’t know how to handle such a delicate situation. What if the husband was unhinged?

They’d spent hours after their visit to Lorraine trying to agree on the best time to perform the spell. Julie had wanted to use it the minute they arrived home, but Greg’s approach was more cautious. He wanted to understand more about their situation first. Finally, they agreed to wait and see what happened after Julie ‘helped’ the other ghosts she’d met. Neither one was entirely certain what her help would entail, but she was eager to get started. As far as Julie was concerned, the sooner she helped ghosts cross over or whatever it was they needed, the sooner she and Greg could focus on each other.

“What’s your plan?” Greg asked. “Knock on the door and tell the husband you want to summon his dead wife?”

Julie glared at him. “No. I figured I’d stand in the yard and call to her. She’s probably lingering around the house.”

“If she has any sense of fun, she’ll be downtown spying on people.”

“Not everyone is as nosy as you.” She opened the car door and walked around to the side of the house to see if there was any sign of the woman in the bunny slippers.

“She’s more likely inside the house than hanging out in the backyard in the middle of winter,” Greg said.

“I was in my yard when she accosted me,” Julie said, a tad defensive. “Barbara,” Julie called in a loud whisper. “Barbara, can you hear me? I’m here to help you.”

Greg scoped the area. “I don’t see anyone, except the neighbor across the street peeping out her window.”

“Oh, that’s Myrtle.”

Julie jumped at the sound of Barbara’s voice.

“She’s as nosy as they come,” Barbara continued. “I once caught her poking through our mailbox when she thought we weren’t home. She claimed she was searching for a letter that got misdelivered.” Barbara rolled her eyes. “Yeah, right.”

Julie tried to quell the nerves fluttering in her stomach. “Hi, Barbara. I’m sorry about last time. If it’s okay with you, I’d like to help you with your issue now. I just need to know what it is.”

Barbara’s face split into a grin. “I’m so glad.” Her gaze shifted to Greg. “Who’s this?”

“My husband, Greg.”

He offered his hand and then seemed to remember he was incorporeal.

Barbara’s mouth formed a thin line. “Would you mind? This is a private matter.”

Julie cut him a sidelong glance. “I’ll catch up with you later.”

“Are you sure?” he asked. “What if this goes sideways?”

Julie laughed. “It’s not a job for the mob.” She paused and looked at Barbara. “Right?”

“No, it’s a personal matter.”

Greg’s ghostly form dissipated, leaving Julie alone with Barbara.

“I’m sorry I was unhelpful last time,” Julie said. “I didn’t know what was happening.”

Barbara waved her off. “It’s no problem. I’m just glad you came looking for me.
